Choosing an input method in Path of Exile 2 is also a build decision. A skill that depends on precise ground placement can change how you spend movement, targeting time, and even Path of Exile 2 Currency when a promising setup needs different gear or support choices. Test both control schemes in real encounters before the November 6 reveal, not in town where every option feels equally convenient.

Judge targeting during pressure, not in menus

Mouse and keyboard generally give you direct cursor placement for abilities that land at a selected point. That matters when an area skill needs to cover a doorway, avoid a dangerous ground effect, or reach an enemy outside your character's facing direction. The benefit disappears if moving the cursor across a crowded screen causes missed clicks or forces you to stop attacking.

A controller changes the relationship between movement and targeting. Directional attacks can feel easier to steer while running through a pack, and analog movement offers a continuous range of positioning rather than separate keyboard directions. The tradeoff appears when a skill needs a narrow landing spot, a specific enemy, or quick retargeting between nearby threats.

Separate input limits from performance problems

Run the comparison in an ordinary combat route with mixed enemy positions, loot on the ground, and a few skills that use different targeting methods. Watch for delayed turns, accidental movement, missed pickups, and moments where your character stops because an input was interpreted differently than intended. Those observations tell you more than a short test against a stationary target.

Keep frame-rate observations separate from control observations. A drop in performance can make an ability appear slow even when the input was registered correctly. Before testing, adjust controller dead zones, cursor speed, sensitivity, and aim assistance where available. Clear desk space for the mouse, charge the controller, and remove notification overlays so outside interruptions do not distort the result.

Match the setup to your build's workload

Builds with frequent ground placement, rapid inventory sorting, or careful target selection place more value on cursor control. That does not make mouse and keyboard automatically superior: a cramped desk, limited wrist space, or repeated cursor travel can create fatigue during long sessions. A setup that performs well for a short showcase may feel poor after several maps.

Controller play deserves a fair test when the build spends most of its time moving, aiming forward, and chaining attacks without selecting individual targets. Check how easily you can reach defensive skills, movement abilities, flasks, and item interaction without releasing movement. If a radial menu interrupts combat rhythm, remap it before deciding that the entire scheme is unsuitable.

Record a baseline before the reveal

Save a screenshot of the controller layout and write down the important mouse and keyboard assignments. Include the buttons used for movement, attacks, defensive actions, item pickup, and inventory access. This creates a useful baseline if the reveal shows new remapping options, radial menus, or equipment shortcuts.

Use a simple sequence when comparing the two setups: clear a combat area, collect several items, inspect equipment, and clean up a small section of stash space. Note which action feels slow and whether the problem is constant or only appears during pressure. Do not buy new hardware for the event before identifying a specific limitation in your existing setup.

Choose one default input method before the keynote and use it when testing any newly shown skill within the next day. If the skill exposes a targeting problem, change the layout first and reconsider the build second. Keep hardware spending separate from poe 2 buy currency decisions, because a control issue should not push you into unnecessary purchases or a rushed respec.
